NNA – Health Minister Wael Abou Faour delegated a group from his ministry to partake in the regular session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, held in Cairo, whereby the delegation revealed the heavy load Lebanon was suffering under due to displaced Syrians.

Despite the overwhelming influx of Syrians seeking refuge in Lebanon, the country sustained advanced health indicators, particularly in vaccinating children and keeping Lebanon polio-free.

The delegation also discussed with the Council’s executive bureau the burdens Lebanon was undertaking in treating Syrians in need of kidney dialysis or suffering from cancer. The costs of these treatments were not covered by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), but fell on Lebanon’s Ministry of Health (MoH).

It is to note that the Ministry’s Primary Health Care Department won an award for best institution to care for patients in the Arab world, granted by the Arab Hospital Federation.
