Kitchener South-Hespeler: Liberal Marwan Tabbara elected

(Submitted by Marwan Tabbara campaign)

Liberal candidate Marwan Tabbara has won the new riding of Kitchener South-Hespeler with 42.8 per cent of the popular vote. With 69.2 per cent of polls counted, Conservative candidate Marian Gagné came second with 35.9 per cent of the popular vote, while NDP candidate Lorne Bruce came third with 15.3 per cent.

Kitchener South-Hespeler is a new riding in the 2015 federal election, encompassing the south end of Kitchener and north end of Cambridge. It includes former chunks of Kitchener-Conestoga and Cambridge, as well as a small section from Kitchener Centre.

According to 2011 census data, the riding has a median age of 36 — the lowest in Ontario outside the GTA.

Voters within that area leaned to the right in past federal elections. But with no incumbent, Kitchener South-Hespeler was widely considered to be anyone’s race in 2015.
